SCBA cylinder Testing

Brother’s Fire Service conducts hydrostatic testing of SCBA cylinders. This type of test will ensure cylinders are able to maintain their rated pressure. The test will also check for leaks or flaws. All SCBA cylinders require periodic testing but testing frequency and service life vary upon cylinder material.

According to the Department of Transportation, hydrostatic testing and service life of SCBA cylinders are the following:

Steel cylinders - tested every 5 years, service life = indefinite or until it fails a hydro test; but commonly regarded as 30 years

All aluminum (not including hoop wrapped) - tested every 5 years, service life = indefinite or until it fails a hydro test; but commonly regarded as 30 years

Hoop-wrapped (aluminum) - tested every 3 years, service life = 15 years

Fully wrapped fiberglass - tested every 3 years, service life = 15 years

Fully wrapped Kevlar - tested every 3 years, service life = 15 years

Fully wrapped carbon fiber - tested every 5 years, service life = 15 years

As with all other testing completed by Brother’s, the hydrostatic testing takes place onsite, at your station. All reports are accurate and are provided to you promptly.
